Overview and Clinical Significance
Stab neutrophils, also known as band neutrophils, are immature white blood cells (WBCs) that play a crucial role in infection response, inflammation regulation, and hematologic health. They are released from the bone marrow during increased immune demand.
Clinical Significance
- Infection & Immune Response: Elevated band neutrophils indicate acute bacterial infections, as the body rapidly produces WBCs to fight pathogens.
- Inflammation & Stress Reactions: Increased band neutrophils may be seen in physical stress, burns, heart attacks, and autoimmune conditions.
- Bone Marrow Activity & Hematologic Disorders: Abnormal band neutrophil levels can signal bone marrow dysfunction, leukemia, or myelodysplastic syndromes.
- Diagnostic & Therapeutic Applications: Band neutrophil counts are assessed in complete blood count (CBC) tests, helping diagnose infection severity, immune function, and hematologic diseases.
Band neutrophils are key markers of immune activation, influencing infection defense, inflammation control, and hematologic stability.
